One of the interesting things about my work is there’s a lot for folks to park cars, trailers, TVs, etc they have for sale. Typically it’s pretty run of the mill stuff, but occasionally something will catch my eye.

Today something caught my eye and not for a good reason.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

Sorry for the lack of full car shots, but I’m hesitant to share anything but closeups with where I work.

The car 2008 SAAB 9-3 4cyl with 160,000+ miles. As you can see it has some really great bodywork (sarcasm Incase you didn’t guess). The hood is held closed with pins and they clearly did just enough work to get it to pass the inspection for a rebuilt title. The asking price $4500.

Yes, he has two local comparison cars shown, and they’re both about $2000 more. However, they are both at dealers not private party, they’re both V-6 not 4cyl cars, both have quite a bit fewer miles, and more importantly neither looks to have shitty body work or a rebuilt title.

I think the price is at least $1500  too high. I might even say $2000 too high. What says Oppo? Do you agree or am I being too harsh

$2,500 and straight to RallyX.

One of their comps is a dealer sale, with V6, in better shape, with 2/3 of the mileage? Yeah, glad he’s  not in the appraisal business.

I’d be embarrassed to call that fill/sanding work ‘ done” on a model, let alone an actual   car .  I’m afraid to see what’s under that body; the frame’s probably mostly JB Weld and zip ties....

Man, 2500 is a lot of coin for a toy. I’d rather send a $500 car. But I wouldn’t dream of buying this hulk, and look at the rest of my fleet.

Um, well there’s the.... or maybe the...hmm probably not much.

Given the miles even the parts that weren’t damage in the wreck are probably pretty warn.

I had the same thought, but it’s 94deg so I decided not to look at the horror that’s under it.

A rebuilt title title is far too generous for this level of workm anship. Should be a “cobbed together” title.

For me to legitimately consider it it’d have to be $1000 with a full tank of gas, and that dollar number may go lower if it’s as ugly underneath as I’m expecting.

I think anyone who pays more than $2000 is getting ripped off. Ugly repairs, rebuilt title, who knows what the accident did where you can’t see... I think the fact that it’s a runner means it could be $1000, and as I say, maybe we could get to $2000 based on other factors, but $4500 is crazy talk.

Popping on CL:

Kinja'd!!!

The only ones that are > $4k are very clean with way fewer miles. Meanwhile the only one that looks worse than this one is the $700 hydrolocked special at the bottom.

I’m thinking it’s worth more like $1500, not $4500.

Are these comparison ads a recent phenomenon? I've seen it done recently on another car on FB Marketplace, equally invalid/unrealistic, but can't recall seeing it much in the past.

I’ve seen it a couple of times, but just like for you it has only been a fairly recent thing.

What I see more often from this lot is people printing out the page for vehicle value from Kelly Blue Book. Typically there at least one of three things happens:  they print out the dealer sale price not the private party price, they mark the condition as very good no matter how shitty the car is, or they print it out even though they’re asking more than the site says the car is worth.

I just realized it’s a 9-3...for some reason, I thought it was the elusive 9-2x Saabaru  (which didn’t have a V6, not sure why that wasn’t a red flag) . I rescind my offer...

A nonprofit I worked at right after college had a really beat, high mile Chrysler Town & Country JXi donated to it. We had no use for it, and were not in the business of reselling cars, but our executive director was a compulsive hoarder (diagnosed OCD), and, it turned out later, an embezzeler, and he never turned anything down.

Anyway, one of our secretaries, single mother, 3 kids, really could have used it, and offered to buy it for $2,000. He printed out the KBB page showing the value at $6,000 (for a lower mile one, at a dealer, in mint condition) and refused to sell it. He had me go out and start it up once a week, get it to temp, which lasted until the battery died. Then, it sat in the parking lot until teenagers vandalized it, and we sold it to a junkyard for $200.
